Rene Maurice Gattefose: The Father of Modern Aromatherapy

This is René Maurice Gattefosé, he is the father of modern day aromatherapy.

Rene Maurice Gattefosse- The Father of Modern Aromatherapy

In the early part of the 20th century modern pharmaceuticals were born.  Chemistry and medicine became entwined.  Antibiotics were discovered, along with vaccines, which saved millions of lives.  Natural medicine and plant medicine were quickly fading into history, in danger of being lost forever.  However, thanks to René Maurice Gattefosé natural and herbal medicine were not forgotten, and today are experiencing a true renaissance.

An Accidental Discovery

Around 1910, while working in the laboratory of his family’s cosmetic company, he badly burned his hand.  Lavender oil was on hand and he quickly applied it to the burn.  He was intrigued at how quickly the oil relieved pain and then healed the burn.  Thus beginning a life long fascination and study of essential oils.  He even experimented with essential oils in military hospitals in World War I.  Noting the antiseptic and quick healing qualities of many oils.  He invented the phrase “armothérapie” for the use of scented plant oils in healing and wellness.

10 Tips for Essential Oils Beginners

10 tips for beginnersAs you know… I LOVE my essential oils.  I love to read about their historical past and how ancient people used them.  I love how they smell and how they make me feel uplifted and energetic.  I LOVE that they WORK and they help everyone in my family (including the dog) to feel better, be healthier, and happier!

If you’re new (or not ) to oils I’ve created a list of 10 tips to you should know before starting out.

  1.  Using essential oils is also called Aromatherapy.  It literally means “treatment using scents”.  In the 1920’s French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse, while studying plant oils “re-discovered” their healing properties and coined the term “aromatherapie”.
  2. Each oil has it’s own unique chemical make up- which gives it it’s unique scent and healing properties.
  3. When applied to the skin they begin to work immediately and travel throughout the blood stream.
  4. Oils affect the entire body- they elevate mood and restore physical health at the same time.
  5. They were used in ancient Egypt, China, and Greece.  In fact the father of modern medicine Hippocrates used them in his practice.
  6. It is believed by historians that they made their way to Western Europe in the Middle Ages with Crusaders returning home from the Crusades.
  7. They should be stored in dark glass bottles and kept away from heat and light.  Heat, light, and plastic will make them less potent.
  8. They are all antiseptic.
  9. When applying to your skin always use a carrier oil (i.e. coconut oil)
  10. They are entirely NATURAL! They are distilled or pressed from the leaves, petals, roots or bark of a plant.

Questions or comments?  I’d be glad to hear from you!!  Leave a comment below and I’ll be sure to get back to you.

The Gift of Frankincense

Matthew, Chapter 2One of my favorite times of year is Christmas.  Since becoming a mother this holiday has become even more special to me. Not just because I enjoy seeing the holiday through my children’s eyes, but because I feel intensely drawn to Mary- the mother of Jesus. God gave us his only son as a sacrifice so that we could experience God’s grace and the gift of eternal life in heaven.  Having two sons of my own, I realize even more how great a gift Jesus is to humanity, and what a holy and faithful woman Mary was.

Frankincense

FrankincenseHistorical Uses:

Frankincense (Boswelia carterii, fereana, and sacra) is obtained from the resin of a small tree, the Boswelia, native to North Africa and the Middle East.  It was highly prized in the ancient world.  Ancient Egyptians used it in the mummification process, as it is skin preserver.  It slows the breathing and calms anxiety, which is probably why it was used by ancients in religious ceremonies.  It is still used in religious ceremonies today, in the Catholic church this is the incense that is burned.  Ancients also used it to deodorize and purify the air in their homes and palaces.  It was very valuable and highly prized.  It was given to the baby Jesus by the Magi, as documented in the Book of Matthew.
